George Allen was the Governor of Virginia and more recently a United States Senator from Virginia. He had run for office his entire life as a devout Christian. When asked during his recent campaign for re-election if his mother was Jewish he both denied that assertion and called it an insult. As it turns out his mother had previously told him that they both were Jewish. In the Jewish religion it is the heritage of the mother, not the father, which determines the religion of the child. Finally, Senator Allen, cornered by the facts published by a Jewish organization, agreed that he was Jewish.
While others condemned him for deception, I welcomed him and gave him some advice that I thought might be helpful. Read my letter to him here.
